More Christmas Knits – Rachel’s “Grape Juice Harvest” Bobbled Set

The color reminds me of grape juice.  With Rachel’s dark hair, blue eyes and fair complexion I knew the clear, bright color would look great on her.  I’ve wanted to knit the mittens forever.   It was an easy pairing. PLUS, the button on the hat I’d bought a few years ago, at Britex Fabrics in San Francisco, with Rachel in mind.  Serendipitous?  I love it when projects come together so easily.

THE MITTENS

Pattern: Yellow Harvest Mittens by Mari Muinonen/tikru (From Vogue Knitting magazine Fall ’08)

Her blog, MadeByMyself I follow and is also linked to on the sidebar.  I knit my mom this designer’s Chevalier mittens for Christmas 2009.  Her patterns are accurate, interesting, and easy to follow. Love the photography on her Blog.

Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica

Color: “S”  Delightfully bright purple

Amount:  1.12 skeins = 154 yards

Needle:  #7

Notes:  Get errata!  Mitten runs Loooong. This I gathered from Ravelry data gathering before making. If I’d knit to the pattern it would have been a couple inches long on me.  I have man hands.  Rachel does not. So, I fudged the decreases at the top a lot.  One turned out a bit shorter than the other. Rachel didn’t mind this quirk. She’s a purveyor of handmade clothing and understands this can happen. Love ya Rachel for lovin’ them quirks and all.

THE HAT

Pattern: Robin’s Egg Blue Hat by Rachel Iufer

Yarn: Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica

Color: “S”  Delightfully bright purple

Amount:  .62 skeins = 85 yards

Needle:  #9

Notes:  Easy Peasy!  Bound off 8, not 12 for tab. 72 sts for rest of hat.   Knit for 5.5” then started decreases.

Gauge: 4 SPI

THE BUTTON

The button is whimsical, artistic and beautiful, just like my sister Rachel.
